ENRICHMENT CLASS GUIDELINES

The Enrichment Teachers have many challenging and fun activities planned for this school year. Since many students, including 7th and 8th grade classes and 6th, 7th, and 8th grade activity periods will use the resource room, it is important that classes run smoothly. The rules of the school do not change, simply because you walk into the resource room. We still expect all students to act in an orderly fashion and be respectful of others. There will be many opportunities for creativity and critical thinking for each student.

  1. BEGINNING OF CLASS
    1. Come in and sit down quietly.
    2. Get out homework and any materials needed for the day.
    3. Immediately begin the assignment on the front board (if there is one).
    4. If you are late, you must have your agenda book signed. Do not arrive late without a pass.
  2. REQUIRED MATERIALS
    1. Always have a pencil or pen. Sharpen pencils before class starts.
    2. Bring all handouts, worksheets, and other materials that are needed for the class.
    3. Plan to learn all that you can each day.
  3. CLASS PARTICIPATION
    1. Participation is vital to your success in the enrichment environment. Strive to be actively involved in individual, small group, and large group learning.
    2. Be courteous at all times. The classroom can get active. Raise your hand to indicate that you have a contribution or question.
    3. NEVER INTERRUPT TEACHERS OR YOUR FELLOW STUDENTS.
    4. Do not interrupt the teacher when he/she is working with another student. This includes standing next to the teacher and trying to get his/her attention. Raise your hand and the teacher will come to you.
  4. HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS AND PROJECTS
    1. Homework will be given on a limited basis. Enrichment will not be more work, but rather more challenging and interesting work.
    2. All assignments, projects, and activities will be collected and checked.
    3. Grades will be given to anything that you produce. In most cases you will have a rubric for self-assessment.
    4. An assignment left at home or in your locker is considered late. Assignments are due at the beginning of the class period.
  5. GROUP WORK
    1. We will be working in groups often.
    2. Different groups will be assigned for each activity.
    3. Each person will have his/her own particular group assignment and must participate to ensure the success of the group.
    4. Group work means teamwork. You are expected to solicit the aid of those in your group, ask questions as needed, and provide help and support to the other members of your group.
  6. EXTRA HELP/TIME
    1. You are welcome to come to the resource room for extra time on a project or help with another subject.
    2. Ask one of your teachers for a study hall pass.
  7. RESTROOM
    1. Restroom trips should be taken care of as much as possible between classes.
    2. If you need to use the restroom during class, write your pass in your agenda book and the teacher will sign it.
  8. CLASS FOLDER
    1. Each student is required to maintain a folder, which will contain all notes, assignments, handouts, etc.
    2. The folder will be kept in chronological order with each page dated.
    3. This will serve as your portfolio and will be used to help you with self-assessment.
  9. SCHOOL RULES
    1. The rules in the enrichment class are the same as anywhere within the school community:

                                                               i.      No gum

ii.      No radios, CD players, Walkman, etc.

                                                           iii.      No foul language

                                                           iv.      Respect, Responsibility, Results

  1. END OF CLASS
    1. Teacher will dismiss class.
    2. Do not pack up until directed by teacher.
    3. Before you are dismissed, the classroom must be neat and orderly.
    4. You are expected to clean up all papers and trash in your vicinity, and to push you chair under your desk.

This document was distributed to all 7th grade enrichment students during the first few days of school. It was to be signed by parent/guardian and student and then returned to Mrs. Kosh.

Rules for ANYTHING That You Turn in to Mrs. Kosh

  1. Your name must be on the paper or project
  2. The date must be on the paper (not necessary on any projects).
  3. Your class must be on the paper or project (Debate-1, Tech-2, etc.)
  4. It must be (either) typed or written neatly. You will not get more credit if it is typed. I am looking for the ability to read something, not how well you can type or if you have access to a computer. However, it will obviously be easier to read if you type it. If it is handwritten, remember that you should NEVER hand in anything that you don’t consider your best work. It is a reflection of you!
  5. If your paper is hand written it should be on lined paper using a black or blue pen. Please do not write anything in purple gel pens to please me. I am too old to try to read fluorescent writing!
  6. If you take lined paper out of a spiral notebook, I do not want to see any “nubbies” on the side of the paper. If you need lined paper, ask me. I will be happy to supply it to you (free of charge!)
  7. If you do not understand the project or assignment, simply ask me for help. You are welcome to email me at school (ekosh@wsd.k12.pa.us) or at home (ekosh2@comcast.net). I always try to check my email at least once a night before 8:00 PM. If all else fails, call a classmate. I have no problems with combining your brains! Sometimes you are a better thinker when you can “bounce” things off another person.
  8. Don’t wait until the last minute to do the assignment. Things come up and you may find you run out of time—not to mention—you do have to sleep at night!
  9. Remember that I grade EVERYTHING you give me. If you take the time to do an assignment, I promise to take the time to look at it with a critical eye and give you feedback. That is called respect. You will notice I expect that in my class but I also give it.
  10. Be creative. Think outside the box. Are you tired of hearing people tell you that? Well, there is a reason they do. You are a gifted and talented student and (even though you might not realize it) you have the ability to do great things in your life. It starts in my class! If you don’t like the assignment I gave you, think of an adaptation. Can you make it better? If you decide to do something OTHER than the exact assignment I have given, please include 3-5 sentences stating why you think your assignment is better or more relevant to you. Put this in the beginning of your paper/assignment or on a separate piece of paper (remember that name!)
  11. Have fun with your assignments! I love a sense of humor. I like someone that can laugh at a situation or find the goodness in the world. Don’t drag yourself down!!
  12. Finally, I will say again . . . What you turn in is a reflection of YOU!!
